The history of M&M’s

M&M’S Ogrin

During the Spanish Civil War during the 1930s. The son of the founder of the Mars Company Forrest Mars Sr was inspired by seeing the chocolate candy Smarties being sent to soldiers during the war. These Smarties were chocolate pellets with a colored shell to prevent the chocolate from being melted. Production started in 1941 when the company was originally called M&M Limited. The two founders of the company were Forrest Mars Sr and the son of Hershey’s chocolate president Bruce Murrie. This led to M&M’s originally being made with Hershey Chocolate. M&M stands for the founder’s last name. During World War 2 they were only sold to the military. These were sent to soldiers so they wouldn’t melt like other chocolate. Around this time Murrie left the company and the Hershey Chocolate within the candy was replaced. The famous “M” started to be printed on them in the 1950’s.
